Cardboard Animal Unit Questions

1) The past is worth preserving because of a few reasons, one of them being it can be useful. If we recycle a variety of materials then not only will it help the environment but it will save us from having to find more supply of those materials. Another reason is that it is good to preserve things from our past because it can come in handy one day in the future.

2) As an artist, I can improve the environment by using recyclable materials such as cardboard and paper. There are so many materials out there that can make so many great pieces of art. This project in particular is great for the environment because were not wasting any valuable resources.

3) An artist has a right to use whatever material he/she wants. The artist does not have to use recyclable materials but a responsible one would. It would be outstanding if there are a lot of very responsible artists because it would help our environment greatly. That is why I enjoyed this project because not only did it give me the opportunity to make such original work, but it helped the environment.

Cardboard Animal Critical Analysis

The first thing I did was cut out the side of the animal's head. I made a dog so that wasn't a big difficulty. After I had two of those, I cut slits into them, which would enable me to make it 3D by inserting round pieces into the slits. There were two main difficulties that appeared in my process. One of them was making the ears. I dog's ears does not have pointy ears in an upward direction so I was not able to involve the ears in one of the round pieces. What I did was cut a horizontal slit on both sides of the head. Then I put a rectangle through them, which is where the ears themselves would go. So then I cut out ear-shaped pieces, put slits in them, and slid them on the rectangle. It turned out great. Another difficulty that I came across was that I forgot to include an extra square piece at the end of the sides of the head. Without the extra square at the end, I would not be able to put a back on it. So I had to cut out seperate squares and glue them on. The process was very confusing but the final outcome of this project was great.

I used form when cutting out the sides of the head and the pieces that went in the slits. I used line and space to cut the slits in the pieces and the sides of the head. There was also space inbetween each piece that were placed in the slits. This all created my unique piece of art.

Matisse Horse Painting Critical Analysis

1) The dominant complementary colour scheme started off being the purple and yellow on the horse. But the orange and the blue in the background was more dominant so the orange and blue ended up being the dominant complementary colour scheme. I chose these colours because I really like them and I thought orange and blue in the back would look good with purple and yellow in the front. It turned out to be very cool and I like it a lot.

2) The only pattern that I used was the purple and yellow in the horse. The main body and the front and back leg were purple. The mane, tail and the two middle legs were yellow. I did this to add some variety rather than emphasis or a focal point.

3) The painting started off as a real portrait of a horse. I then transferred it to the nutex sheet. Once it was on the nutex, I distorted it into Matisse's type of style. Once that was done, I created a fitting background on a seperate nutex sheet and started painting. A difficulty that came by me was making the colour brown for the mountain the horse is standing on. It took a while for me to get the right colour. Once I got it, I transferred the Matisse horse to pieces of nutex, that I painted different colours, and cut the horse pieces out. Then I glued the pieces on and got a product. I thought it looked too plain so I added blue stars to improve it. I made the stars blue because it would be complementary with the orange.

Picasso Horse Painting Critical Analysis

1) I chose the blue monochromatic colour scheme. This means that I only used shades of the colour blue. Not mixtures of blue and other colours, but shades of blue. To make shades, I mixed the blue with the colour black and/or white. I chose an accent colour which is the opposite colour of the monochromatic colour. In this case, the accent was orange because that is the opposite of blue on the colour wheel. I used this because if the whole painting was blue, every component on the painting would blend in and nothing would be visible. So I used orange behind the horse so the horse would stand out.

2) The first thing I did was trace the real horse portrait and transferred it on to another piece of nutex paper. Then what I did was edited the horse by changing the shape, making more viewpoints and making designs within the horse. Everything so far went pretty smoothly but I reached a difficulty; the background. Making the background at first was exceptionally difficult. I tried putting a few ideas on tracing paper so I could decide between them but nothing I could do worked. So when I started my final painting I just came up with a background I liked and put it right on the nutex paper. The painting at times was difficult because of the little designs in the horse but everything pulled through and I ended up with a painting I am happy with.

Cornell Box Project Critical Analysis

1) While making this project, I realized that it is all about what materials you have. When I re-did my Cornell Box , I had access to good fabric, wood, paint, and most importantly focus. I came from a mediocre project to a project that I am very happy with just out of focus. Something that made my project so easy to pull through on was a stencil technique that I used to paint the bricks. I hand made the stencil so it would be more natural rather than absolutely perfect.

2) One skill I learned was how to make a drawing with pencil crayons. I had to play around with many different combinations of colours and techniques. I incorporated my pencil crayon drawing of a scenic outside view into my project by making it one of the pictures on the wall. Another skill I learned was how to make a stencil by using an exacto knife. I grasped the skill to steady my so I could make straight and clean cuts which is a very important factor of using an exacto knife. I how this new learned skill will help in future art projects. Something I can improve on is my pencil crayon drawing. I know this will be useful for many things in the imminent future and I am very eager to excel in this category. I know that I have potential in this technique.

3) Most of the depth within this project came from the couch and the pillows because they were actually 3D. I used a block of wood to make the seats have depth and glued fabric over it. The pillows are folded fabric. I used fabric for a major proportion of my project and I really liked it because it created value by projecting its natural shadows which paper is incapable of. I think I really pulled through on the coach/middle ground.

4) I think I came so far from when I started my Cornell Box. At first I didn't really put so much effort into but out of nowhere my attitude completely changed. I ended up re-doing my entire project because I was unhappy with what I had. The new ideas I incorporated into the new version were adding bricks to the sides and a roof to the top. This idea I think is very ambitious but I am really pleased with how it turned out. I also added a whole window for my fore ground which I think is a way better idea than hanging something. A detail in the project that I really find cool is the wooden floor. It was in the old version and I am so happy that I was able to incorporate it in the new version. What makes the wooden floor look really cool is that the bottom of the box is actually made out of wood. I decided that it would make a realistic floor when coloured brown. I am very happy with the final outcome of my project and I am so proud of how far I came.
